Terakhir kali Timnas Indonesia berada dipeeingkat ini adalah tahun 1998 silam. Raihan tersebut didapat karena Indonesia mampu menembus babak kualifikasi akhir piala dunia tahun 1998 zona Asia. Pada saat itu Indonesia hanya kalah dua kali dari Kamboja dan Uzbekistan. Dan empat laga lainnya berakhir imbang. Namun hasil ini belum membuat Indonesia mampu untul lolos ke piala dunia.
